| TIPS FROM TED (The web-guy & lifelong motorcyclist) |
 |
| It's simple, it's easy, it can save you money - it
can save your life. What is it? MAINTAIN
PROPER INFLATION PRESSURE IN YOUR TIRES! You should check your tire inflation pressure at least once
a week! |
| FACT #1: Most motorcycle tires will lose
about 1-2 psi per month. This is normal behavior. |
Proper inflation pressure is necessary for optimum tire performance,
safety and best fuel economy. To maintain proper inflation pressure,
frequently check tires (when they are cool) with an accurate
tire pressure gauge. Always maintain inflation pressure at the level recommended by
the vehicle manufacturer as shown on the vehicle placard or in
the Owner's Manual. |
| FACT #2: Under inflation is the most common
cause of failures in any kind of tire and may result in severe
cracking, component separation or "blowout," with unexpected
loss of vehicle control and accident. Under inflation increases
sidewall flexing and rolling resistance resulting in heat and
possible mechanical damage. |
| An important safety item for every motorcycle
or ATV is the valve stem cap. Most valve stems, as supplied by
the tire or tube manufacturer, have a plastic cap that is limited
to protecting the stem’s treads and the valve's inner
core. Most of these plastic caps do not have a sealing o-ring
to prevent air loss from the valve stem. As a wheel spins centrifugal
force can cause the valve stem inner core to depress, possibly
causing a loss of tire pressure. Because of this potential air
pressure loss, it is important to use a quality metal valve stem
cap with a sealing o-ring (available from the Thorsen Motorsports
Parts Department). In addition to making sure you’ll enjoy
good tire performance from having the tire inflated properly,
a good metal valve stem cap will help reduce the need for frequent
tire pressure adjustments. When you get your loose wheels, motorcycle
or ATV serviced you will now know why our Service Advisors
recommends metal valve stem caps be added to your wheels. |
